In most fully-equipped modern-day residential kitchens today, you may find a digital kitchen scale, among other modern kitchen appliances and gadgets. Moms who also love baking and cooking will surely have at least one digital kitchen scale for more intricate recipes, food preparation, and cooking.

Are digital kitchen scales more accurate? Digital kitchen scales are more precise than regular or manual scales.  There are several reasons why it is so. Here are a few:

  1. Digital scales in general use a technology that is far more advanced, that is, digital technology
  2. Digital scales automatically reset to zero.
  3. An analog scale uses a pointer that may sometimes be difficult to see accurately where it is at, so there always will be a measure of guesswork.
  4. A few models of digital kitchen scales have two platforms for weighing: one each for larger and smaller quantities.
  5. Depending on the brand and model, a digital kitchen scale may have added features not found in other brands/models and definitely not possible to have in an analog kitchen scale.

That is the general consensus with a lot of valid evidence to back that up. There is much more to it, and going into more details about why it is considered far more accurate than the analog version may be an exciting topic to discuss.  Not in a profound way, but in a more digestible and fun manner.  Let’s do it.

How to Check If a Kitchen Scale Is Accurate

The reason there is a type of weighing scale for kitchen use is that the things you measure are mostly foodstuff.  They cannot be accurately weighed on, say, a weight scale because they are designed to measure the weight of a human being, who weigh much more. The second reason is that a kitchen scale is more often helpful when it comes to following recipes that require a modicum amount of accuracy of the weight of each of the ingredients needed.

That’s one good reason it is vital to know how to check the accuracy of your digital kitchen scale regularly. And when the weight of the ingredients is important.

To check the accuracy of your digital kitchen scale, you may follow the steps outlined below:

  • You need to use objects you know the weights of.  Either you use calibration weights if you have a few of them. Alternatively, you can use new coins like a penny that weighs 2.5 grams. Use two or three pieces, to check either 5.0 grams or 7.5 grams.
  • You may use coins that are not necessarily in mint condition, but neither should you use old, disfigured, or damaged coins.
  • With the scale set to zero, put the three pennies on the scale. You should get a reading of 7.50 grams.  If your scale doesn’t give 0.5 or 0.2 incremental readings, use just two pieces which weigh a total of 5.0 grams.
  • If the scale gives you a reading that is off, do a calibration, and check your owner’s manual on how to do it.
  • An alternative way to check its accuracy is to use the ‘tare’ function.
  • Reset the scale to zero.
  • Place the two coins on the scale which will give 5.0 grams reading. Activate the ‘tare’ button to reset to zero.
  • Put away the two pennies. Take note of the reading; it should now indicate zero.
  • Place the two pennies back on the scale, and it should again give a reading of 5.0 grams.
  • If you get the same reading, you are all set to use your digital kitchen scale.  It now registers an accurate reading.

Do Digital Scales Lose Accuracy Over Time?

A digital kitchen scale can lose its accuracy over time. Contributing factors are regular use, age, and the usual wear and tear.  Its electronic circuitry could also malfunction after some time due to the same factors cited above. The malfunction would result in inaccurate weight readings. Inaccuracies can also happen even in new scales due to extreme temperatures.

Compelling Reasons to Use a Digital Kitchen Scale

When it comes to cooking and baking, a digital kitchen scale can make a big difference and will provide a lot of advantages that are not possible with an analog kitchen scale.

Consistency and Accuracy in Measurement and Quality of a Recipe: Measuring ingredients using a digital scale is done with much more precision and accuracy.  In baking, this is very important because certain chemical reactions that result in better taste, quality, and presentation of the dish is dependent mainly on exact measurements of the ingredients.

Food and restaurant businesses rely on the use of digital scales designed for commercial and business purposes because of these two criteria. Customers expect consistent quality and taste of the food they buy from their favorite restaurants and food establishments.

Control Over Portion and Quantity: In the food industry, proportioning is crucial since it is a business. Quantities of food products and ingredients are carefully planned out to reduce wastage and to meet sales targets as well as to keep and grow their clientele.

The increasing health and wellness consciousness among people requires measurement of the portions of food they consume as per their health and lifestyle goals. That is possible and more efficient with a digital kitchen scale.

Access to Nutritional Data of Ingredients: Remember the ‘Nutrition Facts’ data or table that you see on the label of food products in the supermarket?  A few digital kitchen scales that have more advanced features will also show these data. It may display not only information about the nutritional components but also about proteins, carbohydrates, cholesterol, fat, and fiber content in the food.

Coffee, Cocktails and Other Beverages: Another great advantage of having a digital scale in your kitchen is the ability to follow to the letter recipes in cookbooks, magazines, and on the Internet.  Sometimes, it is hard to do the measurements to a tee, especially with liquids.

Getting the right proportions to prepare a drink or a cocktail is a breeze when carried out with the use of a digital scale. You can forget about estimating the amount of liquid ingredients to pour into your glass, in mixing exotic, complex drinks that require accurate measurements to get the right taste and to have consistency in doing that. You would like every guest you’re entertaining to savor and enjoy the taste as it should be, based on the recipe.

Hassle-Free Measurement Conversion: Some recipes use the metric system, others the English system.  For most of us, that would be a challenge if we are not used to calculating mathematical conversions. That’s exactly a feature we might consider in a digital scale for our kitchen.  It will take care of the conversions for you.

Fewer Dishes to Use and Wash: Ever experienced having to wash a lot of dishes and utensils after cooking a particular meal? It can definitely be a downer. This is where a digital kitchen scale shines.  If a recipe you are doing requires a lot of dry ingredients to be mixed in one bowl, it can be done without the need to use a lot of containers or measuring cups. That means fewer bowls and measuring cups to be washed and cleaned afterward.  You only have to reset the scale to zero with every new ingredient you add to the bowl.

What is the ‘Tare’ Function For?

When you weigh apples or a head of cabbage on a digital kitchen scale, you don’t need to put them on a basket or a container. But when it comes to grains, beans, or liquid, you do need a container.

To get the weight of the foodstuff alone, without the weight of the container holding it, you use the ‘tare’ function.  It is a feature included in most digital kitchen scales today. So, turn on the scale, and put the container first.  Then hit on the ‘tare’ button to reset the weight to zero. You can now weigh the foodstuff without the container’s weight.

For multiple items to be put in the same container, this is how to do it. Turn on the scale, put the container on the scale, then push the ‘tare’ function to reset to zero. Then you put the first item on the container, take note of the weight, then push ‘tare’ again to reset to zero. Put the next item, and repeat the procedure until you have weighed all items.

You have to remember, though, that you must not exceed the weight limit of the scale.  You may not know that you have already exceeded its weight limit. If there’s a built-in function in the unit, it would automatically limit the amount of weight for the tare function. Usually, it is ten percent of its maximum capacity. So, take note of the maximum weight capacity of the scale, and make sure not to exceed that limit.

Lastly, there are digital kitchen scales that have an extra tare functionality. When you place a container on the scale before turning it on, the tare function will automatically subtract the container’s weight once you turn on the scale.

Five Reminders When Calibrating a Digital Kitchen Scale

Regular calibration of your digital kitchen scale is important if you want to get accurate reading and measurements.

  1. Take time to read and understand the ‘Owner’s Manual’ before you start using the digital scale. It has detailed instructions about how your specific brand and model should be calibrated and other vital information to make it work properly. Also, learn the different features to make the best of your digital scale.
  2. The scale should be placed on a stable, flat, and level surface on regular use and when performing calibration. This will make sure it is giving an accurate reading.
  3. Perform a regular calibration based on how often you use it. The first calibration should be done before using it. How frequently you calibrate your scale will depend on the model and the recommendation on the User’s Manual.
  4. Use calibration weights to test its accuracy as part of the regular calibration process.
  1. Use a gripping pad or similar pads to eliminate or reduce vibrations that could affect the readings and make it inaccurate.

An Awesome Digital Kitchen Scale Anyone Would Want to Own!

The foods and ingredients we weigh come in different shapes and sizes, some are solid, while others are in liquid form.  There are those that need to be put in a container, and those that do not.  As for measuring scales to give precise readings, some are designed to measure big quantities, while others are for weighing smaller quantities. Ideally, you should have both types of scales.

But there are digital scale models today that incorporate both functionalities in one awesome digital kitchen scale. Here is a link to check out one of the dual-platform digital kitchen scales available.

Two Platforms for Weighing

What makes this type of digital scale so unique and attractive is its two platforms that will handle weighing bigger and smaller weights with accuracy and precision.  The platforms can be used simultaneously. The bigger, high capacity platform can weigh ingredients up to 10 kg. The smaller one, the precision platform, can weigh lighter ingredients, like powder or smaller quantities of liquid, down to 0.1 accuracy.

The platforms are usually made of stainless steel, so expect it to be sturdy, easy to clean, and good-looking.

Here are other great features that may be included in the dual-platform digital kitchen scales.

Backlit LCD Display That’s Easy to Read

The backlit LCD displays show the reading for both the high capacity and the precision platforms.  For its user interface to be friendlier and really helpful, a bigger numerical LCD display shows the bigger platform’s reading, while the smaller LCD indicates the smaller platform’s reading. This feature avoids confusion with the weight readings.

Weighs Multiple Ingredients

That means not having to use different bowls for different ingredients by using the ‘tare’ feature.  As with other digital scales, set the platform to zero after the previous weighing, and then place the next ingredient.

Measures Liquids

Measuring liquids are more efficient with a function that provides changing the units from fluid ounces to milliliters.

Stylish Looks and Design

To go with the innovative features is the design that is stylish and modern, which could go well with most kitchen interior design. Its stainless steel body makes sure it not only looks clean, but easier to clean as well. Despite having two weighing platforms, the overall dimension may not be too big nor too small.  It can be the ideal shape and dimension to make it easy to store in a kitchen cabinet when not in use, and big enough for a residential kitchen.

The Many Reasons Using a Digital Kitchen Scale Can Promote Good Health & Nutrition for the Whole Family

  1. Losing extra weight or maintaining an ideal weight is easier because you can weigh every ingredient and food for meals that you take daily.
  2. It is a one-time expense that results in an inexpensive means to get much healthier.

Why Not Have Both Digital and Analog Kitchen Scales?

This is not a question that many people would ask themselves when thinking of buying an essential product for the home, such as a kitchen scale. They would be content with just one. And that would be enough.

But there are also people who want the best of everything, if possible. Even if they have gotten accustomed to using an analog scale, they would be among the first to try out a new digital kitchen scale.  These people may not be materialistic or greedy at all.  They may simply be people who welcome change and new technology, and are open to new possibilities. They will even embrace it after they have experienced the benefits of having one.

So, getting yourself and your family a new, impressive digital kitchen scale is not a bad idea at all.  You may have a reliable, well-loved and dependable analog kitchen scale that has served you well for so many years.

But you don’t have to part with it to make room for a digital kitchen scale. You wouldn’t know what you’re missing unless you get one and find out for yourself. And it is also beneficial to be open to new technology sometimes. Who knows, you and your family might just love having both.
